Thursday 17th October 2024. The Richard Kelsall Lecture – Gems Project. Lisa Greenhaigh, from Cheshire Archives, will introduce Gems, a new and accessible way for people to search for, and learn about, local history on-line. Visitors can pop in a postcode and will get a unique selection of newly digitised community-curated images and documents to explore. Cheshire Archives is looking for input from local history enthusiasts and local communities about what should be included to represent local areas' unique histories. Lisa will run through what is involved and discuss how everyone can help people, new to local history, dive deeper into Northwich’s storied past.

Thursday 16th January 2025 - Chester Zoo. Tom Jones will give his illustrated talk about Chester Zoo. This provides an insight into its background and purpose and provides fascinating facts about its inhabitants. Did you know that elephants walk on tiptoe? You will find more about the animals – and Tom’s experiences of doing guided tours over the past few years.
Thursday 13th February 2025 - Thomas Brassey – The greatest Railway Builder in the World? Richard Coackley CBE will outline this great man. Thomas was born and brought up just outside Chester. He deserves to be as well-known as many of his Victorian contemporaries. By the time of his death in 1870 he had constructed one third of the railways in this country and 1 in 20 of railways throughout the World. Brassey was also constructing water and sewer systems and was involved in laying the first Trans-Atlantic cable.
Thursday 20th March 2025 – David Cummings – Chester Celebrations. David will outline scenes from celebrations that take place in the City including The Mystery Plays, The City Passion, Civil War re-enactment, Roman weekends, Diwali, Grosvenor Park Theatre, Lord Mayor’s procession and Cathedral exhibitions.
Thursday 17th April 2025 – Tony Bostock – Cheshire’s Ancient Mariner. Tony will outline the history of Sir George Beeston. The defeat of the Spanish Armada is the stuff of legend. One of the heroes of the naval engagement was Beeston, said to be in his 80s and died at 102. What is the truth about his age, his career and why he is forgotten?
Thursday 15th May 2025 – The Society’s AGM at 7.30pm followed by Eli Lewis-Lycett – The History of Witchcraft in Cheshire. This evening’s talk from writer and broadcaster Eli, will track the subject from its roots in the medieval period through to the seventeenth century and beyond. For thousands of years, all cultures have shared tales and fears of witchcraft. In England, a peak of frenzy for the subject came from King James 1 considering himself an expert on the topic. It was this fascination that had a wide consequence for England. Here in Cheshire, it played out in a remarkable array of murders, magic and mayhem.
