At the end of 2015, the Northwich & District Heritage Society invited primary schools in the Northwich area to enter artwork depicting any aspect of Northwich's salt industry heritage. Four schools decided to take part; Barnton Community Primary School, Great Budworth C of E Primary School, Lostock Gralam C of E Primary School and Witton Church Walk C of E Primary School. By the closing date in March, we had nearly 300 individual entries.
These were overall of a very high standard, and covered a very wide variety of techniques and subjects. The sheer range of techniques – both traditional and innovative - and the wide ranging and remarkable subjects chosen made the job of the judges very challenging. However, after much discussion and consideration, the following entries were chosen to receive the prizes:
Reception/Key Stage 1
First Prize: Sophie Wilkinson, Great Budworth C of E Primary School
Second Prize: Filip Dloniak, Witton Church Walk C of E Primary School
Third Prize: Grace Bailey, Great Budworth C of E Primary School
Key Stage 2
First Prize: Tyler Hutton, Great Budworth C of E Primary School
Second Prize: Olivia Dent, Witton Chuch Walk C of E Primary School
Third Prize: Matthew Manley, Lostock Gralam C of E Primary School
The judges also thought that one item of artwork entered by a class rather than an individual was worthy of a special award, for originality and artistic merit, and an additional Special Award is given to
Year 1 Class – Mr. Allaby, Barnton Community Primary School.
The winning entries have been displayed in Northwich Library, and at the N&DHS AGM/Meeting on 6th May.
A slideshow of all entries is presented below:
Our thanks to all the children for their efforts and special congratulations to the winners. Please assure those who did not win one of the prizes, that all their entries were excellent and only just missed being in the final three by a whisker.
