There is car parking for up to 130 cars down the road opposite the School on the left hand side of Oak Grange, the new McCarthy & Stone flats. There is a drop off point at the front of the School.

Getting There
Train: Greenbank station is a 15 minute walk from the Grange School and is serviced by the Chester-Manchester line. Hartford station, a 20 minute walk, is on the line linking Crewe to Liverpool and Preston. National Rail enquiries telephone 0845 484950.
Bus: Buses stop at the Methodist Chapel in Beach Road (5 minute walk) and at the St John the Baptist Church in Chester Road (8 minute walk), at either end of Bradburns Lane.

The Boys from Lostock – Tony Davies has pieced together stories and photographs of many of the 150 men mentioned on the World War One Memorial at Lostock Gralam. They aged from 17– 48, some won medals for valour. These are stories of ordinary men and boys in extraordinary times.

We welcome back a very popular speaker, Judy Popley. Her talk will be a very gentle visit looking at some gardens not necessarily familiar to you. These are mainly northern based with a sprinkling of southern gardens. Some private, some lesser known stately home gardens but all well worth a visit.

Wednesday 18th May 2022 – at 8.00 pm
Tabley House and Park - Clare Pye will talk to us about the house that was commissioned in 1760 by Sir Peter Byrne and designed and built by John Carr of York. The house was completed in 1767 and Sir Peter and his family moved into the only eighteenth century Cheshire country house to be built in one go. The new house sat in a new park, a splendid Palladian home in Capability Brown inspired surroundings.
Why did Sir Peter decide to build himself a new house? What did he intend the house to do for him? Did the house deliver?

The development of transport in the North West - Manchester historian John Carpenter’s talk looks at the history of transport in the North West in the industrial revolution and demonstrates the strategic necessity for this development. Notwithstanding the importance of water, steam power and climate, transport development was the key to success.

The Americans in Mid Cheshire and Marbury – Clive Brookes will show how Marbury played a significant role in the build up to the allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942 in support of our Eighth Army and, in preparation for D Day, Marbury became a 2500 room hotel.

Mary Fitton - Tony Bostock will relate the story of the life and loves of an Elizabethan Maid of Honour. Mary was born and grew up in Gawsworth Hall, a place many will be familiar with. She became one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourites. As a young lady she was very popular at court and had a number of affairs, bore a few illegitimate children, married twice and had further children. She may have had an affair with William Shakespeare. Was she the “Dark Lady” of his sonnets?
